The Cypriots have often been forced to do things the hard way, scoring late goals to secure home victories against Zenit St Petersburg and Porto, and clinging on for dear life to secure a point in all three of their group games on the road.

APOEL will face Real Madrid with a mixture of excitement and terror. While all players will dream of facing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil, Kaka and Karim Benzema, they will be aware that they could be on the end of a real hiding. It would be a shame for them to be humiliated by Jose Mourinho’s side after coming so far.

Real Madrid claimed six wins out of six to top their group and advance in style to the second round, and Jose Mourinho’s men stormed into the quarter-finals on Wednesday thanks to a comprehensive 4-1 win at home to CSKA Moscow, having drawn 1-1 in the Russian capital last month.

Prior to the arrival of Jose Mourinho as coach, Madrid had failed to go past the last 16 on six successive occasions, but the 1998, 2000 and 2002 winners are back among the elite now under the Portuguese as they aim to claim a first Champions League trophy in 10 years and a 10th European Cup success in all.

Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid will be immensely satisfied with the result of the draw. The spectre of Barcelona, placed ominously on the opposite end of the draw, means that a final showdown between the pair will inevitably be discussed. Despite APOEL’s dream sequence of results to reach this stage, the gulf in class between the sides is undeniable, and Los Blancos will be more than content to travel to Cyprus for the first leg.

Another crucial factor, the suspension of Xabi Alonso from the next match, loses gravity because anything other than progression to the semi-finals for the Spanish giants would represent one of the biggest surprises in the history of the competition.
